John W. Colpitts
Originator of Salada Taglines

Artists that jog usually become great panters...Saps: found in a lot of family trees. These and other taglines have inspired millions of Americans to a laugh and occasionally a lift. The one-sentence tag lines attached to the Salada tea bags were intended to give the tea drinker a little something "extra" while enjoying their cup of tea.
The taglines which are attached to each of the Salada tea bags originated from a list which was first developed in the 1960's by an employee. John W. Colpitts of Salada tea came up with a novel idea of printing messages on the tags of Salada Tea bags to provide tea drinkers with something to ponder while waiting for their tea to steep.
Mr. Colpitts' interest in quotations, sayings, and the like began with his first job in the 1930s. His superior was a man of polished speech who always knew the right words to express exactly what he meant, and did so very well. This ability was, it turned out, due in part at least to his enormous collection of sayings collected from everywhere. Mr. Colpitts in turn became interested, and included many of his own created and collected "sayings" to Salada.
Since then Salada has run several different series and have printed over 30 billion taglines. Many taglines have been developed by other employees, as well as advertising copywriters and other sources. So far our consumers seem to enjoy these "words of wisdom" and play-on-words, as well as the rich blend of top quality tea at the other end of the string.
